Youch! That Wacom Cintiq 21UX is expen$ive. Also heavy. 22.4 pounds with the stand. I'd hope that's a very weighty stand! I wonder why Wacom doesn't list what it weighs *without* the stand? "comfortable lap use" could be for a short period of time. Or is that the shipping weight?

For significantly less cash, there's the Vistablet View 22W. MSRP $1499 but available from many places for under a kilobuck, when they're not sold out. I've looked but can't find a number on the thing's mass.

1600x1200 vs 1680x1050 resolution. 150 fewer vertical pixels but 80 more horizontal.

VisBoard is another brand of these things, there's most likely others.

I'd love to have any LCD tablet, but they'll be even better (and much much friggen LIGHTER) when OLED technology gets more widespread.

If you're really strapped for cash (as opposed to being strapped up *with* cash) you could try building your own LCD tablet.

Results vary, mostly depending on how good the tablet is.
